Down on the international border with Mexico working women can take jobs, earn pay and confidently leave the children in the care of Christian neighbors who will do it right. It was not always so. But the combined efforts of the Presbyterian Church - through the Bicentennial Fund, the Self-Development of People program, and the efforts of a hardworking pastor named Trina Zelle, and suddenly things are possible.
Cristo Rey Project is a non-profit corporation registered with the state of New Mexico, that has provided guidance and technical advice to such groups as Sunland Park Cooperative Daycare (the SDOP project described above) and others, and it continues to develop resources for entrepreneurial and outreach projects within the community. Cristo Rey has set up a food share program, coordinated English and citizenship classes, and offered health education counsel. Cristo Rey also puts on education programs, and coordinates border mission visits for both national and local church groups. Nearby Santa Teresa Presbyterian Church has historically given support and aid to this project.
