This outreach to Hispanic populations in southeast New Mexico's Pecos Valley had several parents. First came Presbyterian Outreach, a service agency caring for the poor, with a 20 year + history in Roswell, staffed by Ruth Martinez and then Orlando Cobos. Then came Iglesia Hispana, a New Church Development effort, now a preaching point, served by CLP Adam Soliz. Then came the prayers and financial support of both the congregations of the Pecos Valley, and the congregations of our partner in Pennsylvania, Shenango Presbytery.
The mission design calls for the engaging of an Hispanic Evangelist to plant fellowship groups, Bible studies and house churches in the communities of the Pecos Valley. The Presbytery plans to offer some energetic servant a 3-year contract to spread the Good News like appleseed, and see what grows in this fertile valley in the desert. A Search Committee has been formed to complete a church information form, interview candidates, and suggest to the presbytery a person to call. Target date for completing this task is the January 2006 Presbytery meeting.
Members of the Search Commitee are Chair Gene Harbaugh (Carlsbad), Vice-Chair Veva Byrd (Roswell), Sam Lanham (Carlsbad), Janell Kane (Corona), Gerritt de Graaf (Dexter), Molly Hartung (Alamogordo), and Jerry Mahaffey (Shenango Presbytery).
