The First Presbyterian Church of Lovington has already weathered the "bust" of the oil economy and the ensuing population decline. In another place the future might have seemed as dry and empty as parts of the eastern New Mexico plains. But not to this congregation, which regrouped and began anew.
We have asked: "How is God calling us, working together to be faithful in our stewardship of spiritual gifts that God has already given us in Jesus Christ?" The answer is, that the most important gift we have to share, in an environment that leans toward the fundamentalist, independent Bible-church style, is instead solid, thoughtful, reverent Presbyterian worship of God. We are a mission outpost of that tradition, and the path of faithfulness shows here, in a growing congregation and Sunday School.
Lately the congregation is undertaking a new mission, "Cornerstone", in cooperation with the local Methodist church, who initiated this direct service to the poor. The Presbyterian contribution is to provide personal care articles and such things that food stamps do not address, through 5th Sunday, Peacemaking and Pentecost offerings.
Worship, Bible Study, and Mission in service to Jesus Christ are healthy here on the high plains of New Mexico.
